The 100-foot-long white curtain that introduces the exhibition obscures what lies immediately beyond, creating a sense of anticipation that evokes the performative action of the stage. Now a chasm has opened between us that holds us together and keeps us apart evokes political theorist Hannah Arendt’s description of the experience of living in the world, which she likened to sitting at a table that both separates and unites us. The title and the meaning of the piece could refer to the current political situation, to political intransigence in general, or to an emotional relationship, underscoring the location of Hayes’s work in the overlap between history, politics, and love.
