Throughout the former Yugoslavia, classrooms once displayed a portrait of Tito facing the pupils. Domanovic captured the resemblance of one of her former female schoolteachers and created a portrait merging the face of Tito. By using artificially generated brass as the texture for the profile portrait, the image becomes further elevated, refering to the steady presence of the monumental character “Tito” in the common mind. ‘Mesing’ (or brass in English), is a material commonly used to make jewerly, dishware, and other household goods, in both the Balkans and the Maghreb.
