Miniature of the Ise Shrine, a Shinto Shrine located in the city of Ise in Mie prefecture, Japan. The shrine has been rebuilt almost every twenty years since 690 A.D. in a gesture of renewal to emphasize the impermanence of all things. The twenty-year timeframe allows a generational transmission of tradition. UNESCO removed the shrine from the list of World Heritage Sites, claiming it not ancient enough-in their view the shrine is only twenty years old.
