Oliver Laric has named a new orchid hybrid developed by a German breeder, after the Burmese activist Aung San Suu Kyi. In 2009, the Singaporean Government honored the Burmese Prime Minister General Thein Sein by naming a new orchid after him, “Dendrobium Thein Sein”. In response, a new orchid was named after the Burmese opposition politician and General Secretary of the National League for Democracy, Aung San Suu Kyi. The orchid has been registered with the Royal Horticultural Society in London as “Doritaenopsis Aung San Suu Kyi”. Doritaenopsis is an intergeneric hybrid between the orchid genera Doritis and Phalaenopsis. It is a common practice to name new orchids after politicians or celebrities, some include: Nelson Mandela, Angela Merkel, Barbara Bush, Michelle Obama, Jackie Chan, Kim Il Sung, Princess Diana, and Joseph Stalin (this is the only orchid that had a name change). The work of Laric shows how even the nominal power has become commodified; one can name stars and new hybrids of orchids for a moderate sum of money.
