‘Naturwissenschaftliche Schriften’, 2006

"The work is a study (one of seven) for a wall painting at the Goethe Institut, Dublin, 2007. The phrase 'Pathologische Farben', comes from a chapter heading in Goethe's ‘Theory of Colours’ (1810), which in turn is a part of his ‘Naturwissenschaftliche Schriften’.
But the work is not about color, or nature or theory. Rather, it moves back and forth between reading and seeing, between philosophical and aesthetic experience.
Goethe considered his knowledge of 'the truth of the difficult science of the colour theory' a higher achievement than his poetry; my reading of theory is entirely poetic. Goethe developed his theory by experimenting with perception; I experiment with language, looking for the accidental poetic potential of words and phrases. For me, the notions of 'nature' and the 'natural' are cultural categories and colours are conventions of language." - Pavel Büchler
